Comunalia strengthens the model of community foundations in Mexico

Through a focus on local development and strategic social investment, the Alliance of Mexican Community Foundation’s (Comunalia) member organizations mobilized mobilized 6 million USD and served 24,464 people directly during 2019.

At the 2019 Annual Assembly, in a session held last December in Mexico City, Comunalia’s Board of Directors released the report of the activities carried out in 2019, with the attendance of members of the partner community foundations in the country.

During fiscal year 2019, Comunalia joined the support of 114 grassroots groups and communities and strengthened 658 civil society organizations and public entities through the work of the 16 community foundations that form the alliance.

The achievements of the previous year have been possible thanks to the human capital of the Comunalia, consisting of 171 counselors, 347 collaborators and 522 volunteers, distributed in 15 states throughout Mexico.

As part of its mission to strengthen and link the work of community foundations in Mexico, the launch of the Comunalia Hub was announced. This initiative will offer them a range of services and opportunities such as: Gobertia platform, webinars, fiscal analysis, scholarships and events, and classroom training.

The systematization and institutionalization of processes, administrative policies, internal regulations were also reported.These included the Manual for Compliance with Obligations Provided in the Federal Law for the Prevention and Identification of Operations with Resources of Illicit Origin, and the implementation of the Quicken System for optimal control of Comunalia’s budgets and cash flow.

In 2019, several alliances were established with other civil society organizations at the national and international levels such as Appleseed, Thomson Reuters Foundation, A day to give Mexico, Amazon, European Community Foundation Initiative, Global Fund for Community Foundations, Alternativas and Capacidades, Cemefi, Hispanics in Philanthropy, Community Foundations of Canada, Global Giving, Innpactia, Civicus, UK Community Foundations, UnidOSC, and WINGS.

Comunalia’s management also reported on the participation in national and international events,  such as the Collaborative Leadership Workshop and Workshop on Positive Narratives of Alternatives and Capacities, the USAID Strengthening Learning Forum, the CEMEFI Annual Meeting, The Latam Probono Summit, the UnidOSC Meeting, the Datatón 2019, the BBCA Meeting in Chicago, the Conference of the Community Foundations of Canada, the United Kingdom Conference of Community Foundations, the WINGS International Networking Meeting in Kingston, Jamaica, and the WINGS Latin American and Caribbean Regional Meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

In this way, Comunalia promotes the strengthening of each of its members through collaborative learning, seeking that the work undertaken has an effective social impact within its community, and achieving a projection abroad of the Mexican model of community foundations.
