14 Ago More than 30 thousand people in 14 states will benefit from the active communities fund
Monterrey, Nuevo León, August 14th, 2020. The alliance between Comunalia and the Coca-Cola Foundation selected a total of 38 social projects that will be benefited by the Comunidades Activas Fund to face the effects of the Covid-19 crisis and thereby contribute to the social and economic reactivation of Mexico.
The call for projects, which was promoted in collaboration with 15 of the foundations that are part of the Alianza de Fundaciones Comunitarias de México in 14 states of the country, was aimed at civil society organizations and grassroots groups that address issues of access to water, humanitarian aid, support for small businesses, and the empowerment of youth and women.
Through the Comunidades Activas Fund, Comunalia and the Coca-Cola Foundation will invest more than $ 32 million pesos in the states of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Jalisco, Querétaro, Puebla, Morelos, Yucatán, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo and Estado de México.
The programs and initiatives selected by the Fondo Comunidades Activas, 30 operated by civil society organizations and grassroots groups, and 8 from community foundations, will directly benefit 33,051 people, of which 55% are women and 45% men; and a total of 122 thousand 821 indirect participants around the country.
This project is part of Comunalia’s strategy to promote increased financing at the local level and the strengthening of initiatives operated by partner community foundations, civil society organizations and grassroots groups, which are all part of the construction of the processes of resilience in Mexican communities.
The current context of the epidemiological crisis has caused an abrupt decrease in local consumption, impacting the economy and especially the population living “day to day» in urban and rural areas. And despite the fact that organized civil society has not stopped serving the most vulnerable populations, efforts are already insufficient after the extension of the period of confinement.
In Mexico, just in April, the first month of the pandemic in the country, Covid-19 affected the income of 16.7 million households, which according to estimates from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) means in 3 out of 10 homes at least one family member lost their job or suffered pay cuts.
The Comunidades Activas Fund Grant was possible thanks to the collaboration of Fundación Comunidad; Fundación Comunitaria de la Frontera Norte; Fundación del Empresariado Yucateco (FEYAC); Fundación Merced Coahuila; Corporativa de Fundaciones; Fundación Cozumel; Fundación Merced Querétaro; Fundación del Empresariado Chihuahuense (FECHAC); Fundación Comunitaria Malinalco; Fundación Punta de Mita; Fundación Comunitaria Oaxaca; Fundación Comunitaria Puebla; Fundación Comunidar; Fundación del Empresariado Sonorense (FESAC); and Fundación Internacional de la Comunidad.
During the next few months, the selected Comunidades Activas Fund initiatives and projects will be executed, so that in March 2021 they can share the results and impact of their work within their communities.
