The Importance of Community Foundations in the Face of COVID-19

Territorial foundations (TFs), also known as “community foundations,” are institutions created by and for the people of a given territory with the purpose of supporting its sustainable development. Territorial foundations coordinate cooperation among different stakeholders (individuals, families, businesses, organizations) and mobilize the community’s various resources (money, knowledge, networks, volunteers), to support community organizations and initiatives through grants and guidance in various areas relevant to the community itself (education, health, children, the environment, etc.), so that they can collaboratively address local challenges and promote sustainable development.
This guide was developed as part of the project “Sowing the Seeds of the Regional Foundation Model in Chile,” carried out by the Center for Philanthropy and Social Investment (CEFIS) at Adolfo Ibáñez University with support from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the participation of 19 civil society organizations working to promote sustainable communities in Chile.
