The Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy at Grand Valley State University, with support from the Mott Foundation, presented the study *Connecting Community Foundations with Family Philanthropy in Latin America: Mexico*, exploring the dynamics of the philanthropic ecosystem at a pivotal moment in its development.
At the SDG Summit last September 2023, Comunalia was granted Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). This will allow us to share the work and role that philanthropy plays in addressing global challenges at the local level, contributing valuable perspectives and insights.
On November 9 and 10, we gathered at the 2023 Community Foundations Conference in Saltillo, Coahuila, to connect and interact in person with the members of our Alliance, and we inspired and committed ourselves to continuing to strengthen community leadership so that communities can take ownership of their own development.
We are supporting nine member organizations of our Alliance through the project “Building a Sustainable Future with Community Foundations in Mexico” to accelerate progress toward the SDGs by deepening their understanding of the goals and integrating them into their agendas through flexible funding, personalized mentoring, and peer learning.

For strengthening civil society in Mexico through the exchange of best practices, projects, and initiatives among community foundations; as well as fostering spaces for collaborative learning and the co-creation of advocacy strategies for sustainable development and the social transformation of communities, the Alliance of Community Foundations of Mexico received the 2022 “Commitment to Others” Award from the Mexican Center for Philanthropy (Cemefi).
On November 10, the Alliance of Community Foundations of Mexico held its 2022 Extraordinary and Ordinary Assembly in a hybrid format, during which amendments to the Governance Manual and Bylaws were proposed, and the 2023–2028 Strategic Plan—which defines and charts the course for the network’s future—was approved.
At the first meeting of the Active Communities Fund, held in Mexico City on October 20 and 21, nine representatives from our partner community foundations and 12 leaders from civil society organizations and grassroots groups participated to engage in dialogue and share experiences using the appreciative inquiry methodology.
