Network Strengthening Initiative in the Northern Part of the Country Comes to a Close

Monterrey, Nuevo León, July 21, 2020.— In recent years, my conversations with leaders in the social sector have often centered on one important question: How can we inspire greater trust in the work of civil society organizations (CSOs)?
Generally speaking, the responses tend to focus on finding solutions based on accountability and institutional strengthening, and although I am a firm believer in transparency and best practices, I think we are losing sight of one of the great lessons of 21st-century communication: social influence.
These days, what inspires the most trust—more so than an advertisement—are messages from our peers, the people around us, or those with whom we identify. This is evident in our personal social media accounts, as well as in Amazon reviews, Airbnb’s business model, and even studies on the decision to donate 1.
That’s why #YoDonoPorqueMx is a campaign that amplifies the voices of people who contribute to social causes—whether as donors or volunteers—and shares their stories on social media, allowing us to identify with their actions. When we give people the opportunity to express in their own words what inspires them to donate, the results are surprising. Plus, there are direct benefits:
● Your donors and volunteers feel appreciated.
● You create valuable content that can inspire more people to donate.
● You learn more about what truly motivates people, which will help you improve your communication strategy.
Will you join #YoDonoPorqueMx?
Throughout September 2020, through your community foundation or social initiative, invite your donors and volunteers to share their donation stories on social media.
Based on our experience with #UnDíaParaDarMx and #YoDonoPorqueMx, we recommend the following steps to get our communication and social influence plan off the ground:
1. Identify the most suitable people and explain the benefits of sharing their story.
2. Use questions to guide the narrative. Invite the person to think about their most recent donation and ask: What inspired you to make that donation? Why did you choose that project? How did you feel after donating?
3. Share the story on social media as a short 1-2 minute video or in a post accompanied by an image. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #YoDonoPorqueMx!
