Foundations from the United States, Canada, and Mexico are organizing the first North American Community Foundations Summit in Mexico City.
More than 100 community foundations and civil society organizations gathered at the first North American Community Foundations (NACF) Summit on February 5 and 6, 2018.
The summit was organized by Comunalia, Community Foundations of Canada, and the Council on Foundations, and took place in Mexico City, where participants discussed shared challenges and how community foundations should work “without leaving anyone behind.”
The first of its kind, the Summit focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and participants discussed how community foundations can work locally and on a daily basis to make an impact on the 17 goals. They also discussed the challenges facing community foundations globally, such as education, economic development, and migration.
During the Summit, a report by the Council on Foundations was presented that explains how community foundations can identify which SDGs apply to their community and the steps needed to address them.
One of the final outcomes of the meeting was a document signed by the attendees in which they committed to working toward the SDGs, building bridges between communities, and collaborating to improve the quality of life in their communities.
