Monterrey, Nuevo León, September 20, 2021. Today, the planet and its people are at a turning point on the path to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda; this is a task in which the public and private sectors, as well as civil society organizations, academia, and citizens, play an invaluable role that we must undertake together.
As part of the Regional Week of Action for the SDGs, which takes place from September 17 to 28, leading up to the Climate Summit (COP26) in Glasgow, United Kingdom, in November, the 2030 Agenda is central to a recovery that is fair, healthy, inclusive, and responsible toward the environment and people.
With nine years remaining to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, at Comunalia we reaffirm our commitment to contributing to the fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda through SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
For a sustainable development agenda to be effective, the 16 community foundations that are partners of Comunalia are committed to fostering partnerships among governments, the private sector, and civil society. As established by the UN, inclusive partnerships are built on principles and values; a shared vision and common goals that prioritize people and the planet; and are necessary at the global, regional, national, and local levels.
Our very purpose is to strengthen the Mexican model of community foundations by: fostering collective work among member foundations to achieve greater social impact in the communities where they operate; researching and promoting the model to ensure its representation and collective voice; and advocating for public policies that benefit the sector and the population.
Through resilience and innovation, starting with the first phase of the Active Communities Fund, we facilitated 123 partnerships within the social ecosystem that had a direct impact on more than 35,000 people in northern, central, and southern Mexico, contributing to economic and social recovery through the work of 15 community foundations, which, together with grassroots organizations and groups, developed 42 initiatives.
The first phase of the Active Communities Fund—a collaboration between Comunalia, the Coca-Cola Foundation, the Inter-American Foundation, and the Mott Foundation—was launched to address the effects of the health crisis between July 2020 and May 2021 and contributed to the achievement of the SDGs, primarily:
- One – End Poverty
- Two – Zero Hunger
- Three – Health and Well-being
- Four – Quality Education
- Five – Gender Equality
- Goal 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth
- Ten – Reducing Inequalities.
We are currently implementing the second phase of the Active Communities Fund, with the participation of 10 Comunalia partner foundations, which are carrying out nearly 50 projects focused on local development and the role that communities play in decision-making, and whose goals are aligned with the SDGs of the UN 2030 Agenda.
The Regional SDG Action Week calls on Comunalia and our community foundations to reflect and continue pursuing actions that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs from a local perspective, giving citizens a voice and opportunities to participate, and forging partnerships that generate a greater positive impact in communities.
Currently, Mexico has achieved a score of 70.6 on the Sustainable Development Goals, on a scale of zero to 100, according to the United Nations Index. This scale starts at zero to indicate that a country has not achieved any of the 2030 Agenda goals and reaches 100 when all of them have been achieved.
According to the United Nations System’s 2020 Results Report, Mexico’s greatest challenges are reducing inequalities; inclusive growth and decent work; industry, innovation, and infrastructure; life on land; and peace, justice, and strong institutions.
