Grassroots development is a dynamic, gradual, organic, and collaborative process that helps realign local structures, roles, and processes so that the community is at the center of solutions to local issues; community foundations promote this approach through the projects in the second phase of the Active Communities Fund.

We tackle global challenges by addressing local issues
Integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires active listening, reflection, and community dialogue to co-create local solutions, as community foundations in Mexico are doing through the Signos Vitales project. We reflected together at the first seminar, “Integrating the SDGs to Take Local Action on Global Challenges.”

Philanthropy in Latin America and the Caribbean: Engagement with Governments and Inclusion of New Voices
To analyze the complex landscape of philanthropy in the region, WINGS, the Center for Philanthropy and Social Investment at the Adolfo Ibáñez University School of Government (CEFIS UAI), and the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University recently released a report titled “Rules and Incentives: Mapping the Legal Framework for Nonprofit Organizations and Philanthropy in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Fertile Ground: How Can We Change the World Starting Locally?
In an effort to share these projects and enrich the knowledge of those contributing to these global goals, as part of the project “Building a Sustainable Future with Community Foundations in Mexico,” Comunalia invited Proyecto Concentrarte, A.C., to our second “SDGs in Practice” session. Concentrarte presented its “Tierra Fértil” initiative, which, in collaboration with Amigos de San Cristóbal and Cadena A.C., works with the community of Miguel Hidalgo, Chiapas, to promote food sovereignty, a culture of peace, empathy, and the common good through agroecology and other participatory programs.
